I had never come across this edition before so when I saw it I just had to act on it. (Plus, I have a very big weak spot for no-nonsense typographic covers). After a search on the internet, it seems that this fourth impression by Michael Joseph is even scarcer than the publisher's iconic first edition (with its iconic red-rose cover) (those of you who know, know).
Baldwin's US publisher, Alfred Knopf, told him that this book would ruin his career "because you're not writing about the same things and in the same manner as you were before, and we won't publish this book as a favour to you."
And so it was Dial Press--not Knopf--that first published Giovanni's Room in 1956.
Thank you Dial Press for doing us all a huge favour.
Dust jacket shows some yellowing and a small tear in the back corner. Overall in good condition.
