Sophie Calle became an artist to "seduce" her father the art collector. She invents the rules of the game which ultimately rules her, in a practice that fuses life and art.
An example: Paul Auster based a fiction character on her; she reproduced the fictional art works created by this character. Auster in turn wrote The Gotham Handbook, offering Calle -- real life, non-fictional character Sophie Calle -- instructions on How to Improve Life in New York City, which she carried out and documented.
This and other projects are featured in this extensive and richly illustrated catalogue, published on the occasion of the same-titled exhibition held at the Centre Pompidou, providing an overview of her work until 2003.
This book found a good new home.
