Here’s Lucy Lippard, having changed her mind since her last book of criticism, Changing (1971). These two books mark the turn from a male-oriented art criticism and critical approach, to all kinds of feminist writing, including experimental fiction—reprints of which have been issued lately by L.A. publisher New Documents. 

In From the Center's introduction, Lippard writes: “It is no accident that I finally accepted feminism during a period spent alone with my five-year-old son in a fishing village in a foreign country, good and far away from the art world. I had retreated to write fiction—something I had been doing in fits and starts all my life . . . I began to write for myself rather than for some imaginary male audience and, by extension, I began to write for women . . . ” 

I’m offering these two books as a pair that reflects a significant transformation in the life and work of the author. From the center to oneself.
