Published in the late seventies and early eighties, these novels by writer and librarian Ann Shockley are daring in content and form.
Loving her is "the intense, erotic novel of a black woman's discovery of love and awareness in the arms of another woman." In Say Jesus... "the physical and emotional attraction a charismatic black female evangelist feels for a beautiful but damaged blues singer, a woman called Travis Lee, grows into a powerful, sensual love in a southern city [Nashville] rocked by racism, intolerance, and sexual violence." Anti-racism did not keep Ann Allen Shockley from writing romance. More than a cross-genre novels, they are what we call intersectional literature today. Shockley was also among the first lesbian novelists writing about interracial love, in her short story collection, The Black and White of It (1980) (also available via and so on books).
Both are in read condition, Loving Her is in a better state than Say Jesus, which has a damaged back and a name written in pen inside. Otherwise they are excellent copies, with remarkable covers in the style and typography of pulp romances.
In the spirit of love, I offer them as a couple.
